we continue to await action on hagel next week. in theory the pit fall is something comes out in the next couple of days that in some way disqualifies him. i know not one of the 15 republican senators who signed this letter asking president obama to withdraw chuck hagel as his nominee for secretary of defense held even a 1% hope that that would happen. they do not think that hagel is the right person on the right time. i do think it's worth noting is john mccain. we've talked about john mccain and chuck hagel. once very close friends. mccain during the chuck hagel confirmation hearing was one of the most poignant, maybe ted cruise was the most poignant, but one of the most pointed critics of haling. mccain not putting his name to that letter. it's -- this seems like a foregone conclusion here in that this is much more for the public record and for history's sake why this letter was sent. >> and one more thing. before we leave, hagel, is this whole stir yesterday where. >> did you take money from the friends of hamas? >> it's lake-e

now lindsay graham wants i think every private thought that chuck hagel has ever ever had and every public word that he has ever uttered. look, i think it is shameful what he is having to go through on that side of this. they're not questions that are holding this up based on what his thoughts are on iraq or -- i'm sorry. not on iraq, but on afghanistan, but instead on stuff that's played out or in benghazi, which, quite frankly, he had nothing to do with. he was a private citizen. >> when we get to the budget issue, the president is coming out there, and approximate showing the dire consequences of what happens with this meat clever approach, as he said. republicans -- house and sfat are on recess, so there's certainly no negotiation going on even at staff level apparently right now. now what happens? we go to the next stage, which is the automatic cuts go into effect, and they start talking about a continuing resolution, and further kicking the can down the road? >> i do think -- i do think there will be an attempt and you saw this by the president, and you see the democrats in the senat

i do not think it makes sense to filibuster chuck hagel. i think republicans are not in a position politically speaking to win that fight. >> thank you very much. chris cillizza, we'll be watching and watching tonight and that does it for this edition of "andrea mitchell reports." and my colleague tamron hall has a look at what's next. >> great to see you. will president obama persuade congress in the state of the union address to do something big in his second term? joining me live, congressman chris van hollen and former white house speechwriter john lubbock. plus, the white house confirms president obama made a last-minute adjustment to the speech to respond to north korea's third nuclear test conducted overnight. we're also following developing news. first vote on chuck hagel's nomination to be the next defense secretary happening within the hour. 45 minutes after the hour. we'll bring it to you live. and i have diabetic nerve pain. i felt like my feet were going to sleep. it was like pins and needles sticking in your toes and in your f
